At Bolsover Junior School, we aim to encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences so that, the confidence of the children is enhanced. Children have the opportunity to be inspired by, listen to and appreciate a variety of musical styles as well as plan, compose and perform throughout our high-quality curriculum, which follows the national curriculum documentation. Children are to develop their understanding of technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch and rhythm and are encouraged to use these terms during their lessons. . From their starting points we aim for all children to access Music at Bolsover C of E Junior School. This will provide the foundations needed to support the transition into secondary school and beyond.

The National Curriculum Aims
Music is a deeply creative art form embedded through life at Bolsover C of E Junior School. The national curriculum is at the heart of our teaching, whereby our children learn to:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

What do the progression in skills for Music look like?
Assessment in Music
As with all areas of the curriculum, assessment is an integral part of the teaching process. Class teachers should keep records of work carried out, and levels of achievement of the work.
The Charanga scheme of work consists of six half-termly Units of work. The final unit for each year group – Reflect, Rewind and Replay – allows for revision and more extension activities. This allows for formative assessment. It is used to guide the process of individual pupils in Music. It involves identifying each child’s progress in each aspect of the curriculum, determining what each child has learnt and what should therefore be the next step in their learning. Children’s progress in Music is reported to parents through the pupil annual report and consultation meetings throughout the year.
